Test Summary Report
Test Report is a document that is prepared after the completion of the testing process which contains the test results and the information about the list of activities performed during the testing process. This document is usually prepared by the test leads or test managers at the end of the testing project and is shared with various stakeholders like Senior Management, Client, etc. which helps to make a decision on the software release based on the quality of the software.
Features of the Test Summary Report
- Offers information about the various activities performed during the testing process.
- Summarizes the results of all testing efforts.
- Prepared by the test leads or test managers.
- Test managers prepare this document at the end of the testing project.
Information provided in the test summary report
Project Information: Information about the project such as project name, product name, product description, version, project duration (Start date and End date) is mentioned in the test summary report.
Test Objective: The objective for each type of testing such as unit testing, performance testing, integration testing, system testing, etc. is also included in the test summary report. For each type, the purpose of testing is included in this section. For example, the purpose of Integration testing would be different from system testing.
Test Summary: The summary of the test execution is included in the test summary section. Below information is included in the test summary section:
- The number of test cases executed
- The numbers of test cases pass
- The numbers of test cases fail
- Pass percentage
- Fail percentage
Generally, these data are represented in the highlighted table and graphs
Test Environment & Tools: This section provides details of the Test Environment where testing was carried out. Server, Database, Application URL, etc. details are mentioned in this section.
Defects: This is the most important information included in the test summary report. Below information is included in the Defect section:
- Total number of bugs
- Status of bugs (Open, Closed, Inprogress)
- Number of bugs open, resolved, closed
- Breakdown by severity and priority
Template of the Test Summary Report
The test summary report template is defined as per the IEEE std 829-1998 standard which describes the process of software testing. The important sections of the test summary report which are included with the above details are below:
Test Summary Report Identifier: This displays the unique number generated by the organization which is allocated to this report to help readers and the team members distinguish it from other documents, reports, and deliverables.
Application overview: This section defines the version of the software which is going to be released with the release details for clarity. It includes information about the application name, modules tested, new features added, etc.
Testing Scope: This section provides details of the modules that are in scope & out of scope for testing. Any items which are not tested due to any constraints or dependencies are also mentioned in this section.
Exit criteria evaluation: Exit Criteria is verified after the completion of testing by evaluating conditions like all planned test cases are executed and all Critical defects are Closed etc.
Approval/Sign Off Approvals from the authority in the form of signatures and documentation are included and provide to the testers based on the satisfaction of exit criteria.
